Moodle .M.onday – Terraria Edition?
avatar

We’ve been discussing patch 1.1 on the forums : http://www.moodleweb.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1208

If you’re not familiar with Terraria check out the trailers on steam. This is how I describe it in my steam recommendation – “If you’ve ever wanted to construct the Mines of Morria, or tunnel under the English Channel – one square foot at a time.” – It’s not an easy game to describe… it must be experienced.

So whose up for playing this monday?

Indie Royale – the REALLY BIG BUNDLE
avatar

Indie Royale

What is Indie Royale?
Indie Royale is an indie game bundle website that offers up four top-quality indie titles every two weeks for you to purchase at seriously silly prices. All you need to do is pay the price stated – or pay more – and the four games currently featured will be yours to keep forever.

The website has been set up by the creators of leading independent video game editorial site IndieGames.com and the makers of notable online download service Desura as a joint venture. We know our indie games (a little too much, some might say) and we know the games that are worth playing.

The point of Indie Royale is to put the spotlight on those indie titles which provide fantastic experiences, but may well have been passed over by a good portion of the mainstream gaming public. If you purchase an Indie Royale bundle, you can be safe in the knowledge that you’re not only getting four brilliant indie games – you’re also supporting worthwhile developers.

the REALLY BIG BUNDLE:
- Really Big Sky (available on: windows, desura, steam)
- Runespell: Overture (available on: windows, mac, desura, steam)
- Cthulhu Saves the World (available on: windows, desura, steam)
- Eufloria (available on: windows, desura, steam)
- BONUS: Breath of Death VII (available on: windows, desura, steam)

I still like Killing Floor

Killing Floor

Ok, so the game is a few years old now. In fact it’s 7 years old. Well, sorta. It began as an Unreal 2004 mod until Tripwire picked it up and ported it to their Red Orchestra engine in 2009. So really it’s just under 3 years old. It’s got cheesy music and ‘meh’ character design. The voice acting, although funny, is pretty silly/dumb. The mood though, the mood is good. It’s terrifying. The ambient sounds, level design and intense gameplay make for a truly scary experience. You’re always in danger but it’s manageable so long as you and your teammates keep cool. It’s fun.

Wait, is everyone familiar with the game? It’s a multiplayer coop wave-based zombie fps for up to 6 people. Players select a ‘perk’ which is similar to choosing a class though less restricting. Rather than not being able to use certain things instead you get bonuses. Doing certain things levels you up in whatever you’re doing. For example you gain in the Medic perk when you heal, the Sharpshooter perk when you kill with headshots, the Support specialist when welding doors, Berserker when using melee and so on.(Also Commando, Firebug, and Demolitions) As you level up in these perks you get better bonuses in addition to other things. At lvl 5 with my Medic I was rewarded full armor at the beginning of each game.
The game is wave based much like good ol’ Black Ops Zombie mode. Players get money for kills and can buy new weapons, ammo and armor from a vendor available between each wave. They, of course, get harder and come in larger numbers ending with a rather tough boss. Teamwork is stressed in this game and if players don’t work together the chances of beating the boss are pretty slim.
All iron sights, no crosshairs. The Red Orchestra engine always seemed very accurate. It really feels like bullets go where they should when aiming. Head shots are satisfying.

Usually I overplay games and lose interest. All too often this happens way earlier than I’d like. There have been only a few games that I keep going back to. Nothing I can always play 24/7 but I keep on going back and keep on having fun. DoDs and now Killing Floor I think are my two longest running. If you’ve questioned it before I’d suggest to go for it and buy it. If this is the first you’ve heard of it I’d suggest looking into it a bit. Most convincing would be a free weekend as the screens don’t really look all that impressive. If you tried it and didn’t like it I’d suggest to either try it again or to not buy it. Heh.

I did/would pay 20 bucks for it. You should pay 10 to 15 dollars on a steam sale.

Dead Island: Final Thoughts
avatar

Dead Island
Finished it! Albeit more of a personal preference, I think the game really shines in coop mode. For sure in the most obvious/logical sense that all the voice acting and cut scenes assume there are four heroes. I completed about 70 percent of the main plot playing single player before we finally bought it for bean, playing it through purely coop after that. Granted there are always tradeoffs when playing either single or multiplayer modes, this game is definitely playable either way. It just so happens to be equally capable both ways where I find most games can only manage to get one or the other right.

We spent somewhere between 30 and 40 hours beating it. It’s hard to say exactly since we restarted it afterwards and continued to play but my single player character is at 70 percent of the main plot and has 33 hours logged. We are the take-our-time type players and sometimes leave our chars in game while doing quick chores so our time may not be the same as others. The lvl cap is currently 60 and we ended the game just above lvl 40 which of course left us with even more incentive to replay. Like any other RPG the enemies lvl up with you. Although even higher lvl zombies in the first ‘area’ of the game are way easier than others. Their HP and DMG increase but they are still enemies that generally start out on the ground, have no armor, etc. You have access to all your fast travel spots when replaying the game though you can’t trigger later main plot quests without finishing earlier ones.

The modding community is surprisingly strong for this game. It’s rather easy to do and considering the state of the game at launch it was begging to be ‘fixed’ already. And for the record, bean and I had minimal problems running Dead Island. Anyways, the two mods that stand out to me are the Directors Cut Mod and the Romero Mod. The Directors Cut fixes some of the skills and tweaks damage/force. It’s not a massive difference but apparently it is generally agreed that it makes the game more ‘like it should be’. The Romero Mod removes all running zombies as well as any damage to the body, only the head. You can still hack limbs and knock them over but they won’t stop attacking until you destroy the head. Most of the modding activity seems to be on the steam forums. Heres a handy top 10 mods list.

Part of why I had the motivation to get this written tonight is that the first DLC is being released tomorrow! Bloodbath Arena is a single and multiplayer survival-mode-type expansion with 4 new ‘arenas’. XP and loot crossover to campaign mode and there is a new bomb weapon too. The DLC is free to those who pre-ordered and 10 dollars for the rest of us. I’ll be buying this. I am saddened though that I haven’t heard anything about a skill point reset option. I’m going to feel the pull to make a character strictly skilled for a survival mode.

Download the title music (er, the trailer title track rather) Here. It’s so good.

I would say this is a 50 dollar game. After accounting for my zombie coop biased I’d still comfortably say it’s worth 40 bucks.

Sequence

Sequence

‘Cause we love Ronald Jenkees!

I stumbled upon Sequence a bit ago on steam. It’s a rhythm based game with strong RPG elements, fully compatible with current rhythm gamepads and most importantly a soundtrack by Ronald Jenkees and some other guy.

The art and design is quite good even if the ‘story’ isn’t. The voice actors are talented but the writing is ‘bleh’. Does this matter overall in a rhythm RPG game? Not really, especially since the music and sound is so good. The trailer explains it better but basically the game has three different tracks you have to watch out for. One gives damage if you don’t block, the other gives mana and the third casts spells when you choose. So it’s an interesting twist on your basic rhythm game. Sequence seems to excel in the RPG area, full of items and equipables. The entire game consists of ‘floors’ you have to beat, of which are ten and there seems, at least early on, to be about 3 different choices of monsters to fight on each floor. There is crafting and in addition to items and spells there are also ‘floor keys’ to craft to allow you to get the next level.

The game seemed to go from too easy to rather difficult quickly. Which is a good thing overall, especially with rhythm games which can get quite boring once you get past the expected learning curve. I think I’d do much better trying a more conventional rhythm gamepad than the keyboard.
I’d say if you’re either a rhythm game fanatic and/or a Ronald Jenkees follower this relatively cheap game is more than worth it.

Can’t do this article without including a Ronald Jenkees song/vid

Also don’t forget to join the Ronald Jenkees fan club steam group.

ATTENTION: Steamed Hacked!

Steam Hacked, Encrypted Credit Card and Password Info Accessed
Better change those passwords just in case.

UPDATE: Though everyone should take the necessary precautions, I wanted to make it clear that the data stored in Steam is encrypted, as Gabe Newell says in the statement posted.

According to a post over at PC Gamer, Valve’s Steam database has been exploited by hackers. Now would be a great time to change your passwords if you use the service.

Gabe Newell sent out the following details:

“Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked.”

While there’s no evidence at the moment of illegal credit card activity, it’s advised that everyone affected by this take precautionary measures by accessing Steam’s settings and changing both Steam passwords. Valve is still investigating the situation.

Steam appears to be another in a growing line of compromised services, including Sony’s previous exploit woes at PlayStation Network, as well as Bioware and Codemasters.

Hardware/Software Exchange
avatar

Building a second computer? Need a new video card? Have computer parts taking up closet space? Extra copies of something on Steam? Giving away free? Want to barter? Trying to sell?
Most of us build a new computer every few years. Others build even more often if they’re trying to keep an acceptable secondary machine around for their partner or otherwise. This constant rebuilding usually results in an excess of slightly-used-but-still-usable parts. We suggest that the community attempt to make use of these extras. Having a second or third machine around can be quite useful. A machine designated for media-only is convenient and having one around for friends/company to use when visiting can be handy. Especially now that we’re in the age of digital purchases we sometimes find ourselves with extra copies of games/programs that could be shared with community members.

The .MWeb hardware/software exchange forum section is up!

Check it out and see if there is anything you could use and make sure to post up what you have extra while you’re there. We need a more creative title for this. .MWebsList? .mBay? .MCycle? Something more original? Any ideas are welcome.

Grand Theft Auto V Teaser Released.

Short n’ sweet, we returning to the sunny state of San Andreas.

The song is the title track from the 1968 album “Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake”, by the British band The Small Faces. 1968, that title about fits about right for that year.

The Humble Voxatron Debut
avatar

Yet another Humble Bundle.

Since this morning it’s already added two games, I’m guessing they’ll have at least 5 again by the time the sale ends.

As always Humble Bundle’s feature:
- Cross platform. All games in the Humble Voxatron Debut work natively on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

- Pay what you want. If you bought the games separately, it would cost around $25, but they let you set your own price, even as low as $0.01.

- Support charity. You can give all of your payment to two great ‘gaming’ charities if you want. Or to the game developers, or to the Humble Bundle Inc itself. Or split it anyway you choose.

- DRM free. Install as many times as you like, you can also add many of the games to steam.

GTA4 Carmageddon 2…

Or, “when the physics of reality go to hell”.

I got a laugh. Hollywood should make a movie about this, a horror movie, no explanations, just have the guy running around yelling “Seriously, what the hell!” a lot. So, in that respects it becomes a Halloween post.
